Atmospheric spaces

vessel for imaginary and distant realities

How would it feel to experience distant and/or imaginary realities in physical space? How could these intangible locations be translated and rebuilt into something perceptible by the senses through immediate experience? The aim of this thesis is to develop a set of mechanisms, that embodied in a particular setup or vessel, will bring closer and make accessible remote whereabouts and yet-to-discover loci. The user -or traveler-, is able to directly feel and experience this phenomenal realities that used to remain in the realm of intangible virtualities.

-prototype V2; morphing mirrors and reflections-

The combination of simple elements like light, shadows, reflections, sound and movement can create an immersive experience that resembles and reproduces more complex and unaccessible locations. By using this mechanisms mindfully, an immersive experience is designed, giving the user the opportunity to feel and experience different atmospheres in physical space. Also, the use of less direct and literal means, leaves room for own interpretation and self-discovery.

-ring of light and vessel light structure-

A spatial vessel is created, a self-contained space where different atmospheres will be poured and let to be explored and experienced by the traveller. This space of empiricism might also open new possibilities of discovery and self-introspection, giving some room to personal perception, exploration and enjoyment.

-first light atmospheres-

-V2: light atmospheres-

To recreate a variety atmospheres and locations, various elements will be used to reproduce different phenomena, including different sources of light, breeze, sound and reflections. All this factors will be used to create an immersive experience contained in a soft vessel, that will actuate as the physical space where the user will be able to move, touch, see and hear. The closed and controlled environment will take the user in a journey of discovery along a selection of real and fictional sceneries, as long as visual illusions that will trigger different reactions and emotions.

-prototype 1; morphing mirrors and reflections-

The following mechanisms will be used to create the immersive experience:

• [Light] Various sources of light will be used to recreate different effects and atmospheres.

• [Sound] Stereo sound will also be used to reproduce the atmospheres.

• [Atmospherical phenomena] Elements such as fog, breeze or heat will enhance the experience.

• [Morphing mirrors] Reflective surfaces will be used to scatter the light, create an illusion of a bigger space and bring the traveller and their self-image in the experience.
